THIONE DIOP!

Thione is a master drummer from Dakar, Senegal West Africa and was born into the Diop griot family. Griots, or Gewels in Wolof (ethnic group and language in Senegal and Gambia regions), are oral historians, master musicians, praise-singers, and much more. Thione has been playing Djembe, Djun Djun, Asiko, and Sabar drumming and dancing for over 15 years. Thione's father, Mapathe Diop, also a griot, is a famous Sabar Master Drummer and has been drumming since he was 5 years old.

SELECTED PERFORMANCES / WORKSHOPS

Thione has toured throughout the West Coast in Washington, Oregon, California and British Columbia. He performs, teaches workshops, and currently teaches ongoing lessons in Seattle and works with Rhythmic Arts in Education, a non-profit organization, teaching drumming workshops to young children. Thione has played and performs with many music ensembles including,
